The KHILL metric. We adopt ecological definitions for beta diversity to calculate the effective number of genomes (KHILL) in any set. We explicitly describe the analogy in terms of variables in the KHILL expression (A). Genomes with overlapping k-mer identities and similar k-mer frequencies will tend to have a lower KHILL (B).
