Cancerous cells, highlighted in blue, are isolated from the breast and examined for structural variations in the genome. Individual molecules of DNA, shown as thin lines extending out from the cells, are extracted for long-read single molecule sequencing with structural variations shown as arrows. In this issue, long-read sequencing of the SK-BR-3 breast cancer cell line reveals a large number of novel structural variations and allows for a complete picture of the cancer tumorigenesis to be observed for the first time.
