Cover Epigenetic control of endogenous retroelements (EREs) in human pluripotent stem cells. Alternating orange (nonrepetitive genome) and yellow (ERE) streamer represents DNA; balloons represent a transcriptional repressor tethered to specific EREs by zinc finger proteins. Confetti around relaxed ERE represents loss of repression and subsequent expression of this specific ERE with spreading to the adjacent locus, while repressed EREs are compacted.
