Two-step RT-PCR for quantification of gene expression in varying numbers of CD4+ cells from bronchoalveolar lavage. Using 25 preamplification cycles, the relative expression level of six genes of varying abundance could be accurately measured in as few as 50 starting cells and increased linearly as expected with increasing numbers of cells.
