Mechanical Requirements for Print Ads

DISPLAY AD SIZES:

Trim size: 8.5" x 11"
Bleed size: 8.75" x 11.25"
Live copy size: 7.5" x 10.5" (to ensure a 0.25" safety margin.)

If you wish to run an ad WITH bleed, please create it at the trim size, but extend the bleed 1/8" on all sides and maintain a 1/4" safety margin

FILE TYPES: Please submit your digital advertisement as a high resolution (press-optimized) PDF file. When creating a PDF please be sure to select the "Press-Optimized" option in the initial Acrobat Distiller start-up screen. We do not encourage submission of native application programs such as QuarkXpress, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator because of platform issues but will accept them if you are unable to submit a PDF file. Please do not send ads that are embedded in a text file such as MS Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

FONTS: Use only Type 1 (postscript) fonts, or convert fonts to outlines. Supply all fonts that are not embedded or converted to outlines. If Type 1 fonts are used in a PhotoShop or Illustrator file, be sure they are converted to paths or outlines, or embedded in the files. Select "include document fonts" or "convert to outlines" when saving your files. Type 1 fonts used in PDF must be fully embedded in the supplied file. If QuarkXpress format is used, please supply all Type 1 fonts necessary to output the ad. Do not use TrueType fonts in the creation of your files.

GRAPHICS: All high-resolution graphics must be embedded within the PDF file. All necessary graphics must accompany native application files.

All color files must be in CMYK mode. Never include RGB color scans in your digital ad files.

Line art: Line art should be scanned at a minimum of 1200 dpi in bitmap mode and saved as TIFF or EPS files.

Halftone art: Art to be reproduced as halftones should be scanned at 300 dpi in greyscale mode and saved as TIFF files.
