The revised “biological hierarchy,” which recognizes the dual role of DNA in the evolutionary process. In addition to its protein-coding functions, bulk DNA exerts important effects on cellular parameters (independent of its specific nucleotide sequence), which can have profound fitness consequences at the organismal level.
