Biologically relevant environmental indices show a clear transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage of maize. Each line segment represents the environmental index chosen for the labeled trait; the line's color represents the environmental variable(s) used to construct the environmental index and its position on the x-axis represents the time window. The key shows environmental variable types and the number of times each was chosen. An example of maize development is shown; exact developmental timings differ by genotype and environment.
