A Wolffia plant with a daughter frond attached floats on water as day turns to night. The aquatic plant is painted in the pointillist style pioneered by Georges Seurat, for whom the ubiquitously-used single cell resolution data analysis software is named. The choppy water is reminiscent of the masterpiece “The Great Wave” by the ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai, while the changing sky is painted in the manner of J.W.M. Turner, a master of capturing evanescent light in paint. In this issue, single cells from Wolffia plants under dawn and dusk conditions are transcriptionally profiled (floating green orbs represent individual cells). (Acrylic painting by Tom Denyer.
