An example tree illustrating the grouping of branches according their beak shape morphological rates. The marked topology was then used as input for branch model in PAML (codeml for coding DNA and baseml for noncoding DNA). The maximum number of bins is eight for the coding gene set and 16 for the avian-specific highly conserved elements (ASHCE) set. Here, as an example, a binning with seven bins (#0 to #6) is shown.
