The distribution and direction of fetal brain dDMPs differs markedly across genomic features. (A) Compared to the genome average, dDMPs are significantly underrepresented in CpG islands, transcription start-sites, 5′ UTRs, and first exons, but significantly enriched in CpG island shores, CpG island shelves, and the gene body (see also Table 2). (B) There is an overall enrichment of hypomethylated fetal brain dDMPs (P = 6.74 × 10−53), but CpG islands are unique in showing an enrichment for sites becoming hypermethylated with fetal brain development (P = 2.00 × 10−13) (see also Table 2).
