The number of segment matches can be used to determine if individuals are related. We split the genomes of each individual into segments of length 300 SNPs and then compared the number of segments where the haplotypes match exactly between any two individuals in the HapMap data and 1000 Genomes data. Related individuals have a much higher number of matches when compared to unrelated individuals. (A) CEU (HapMap). (B) YRI (HapMap). (C) AFR (1000 Genomes).
