(A) Variability in gene expression versus variability in alternative splicing. The population mean of each variable is indicated by the dotted lines. The Pearson correlation between the two variables is 0.13 and 0.08 for CEU and YRI, respectively. (B) The set of all genes can be divided into four subsets according to their variability in expression and splicing. We have used the mean of the variability in gene expression and in splicing to subdivide the set of all genes in four subsets. (Subset 1) Genes with low variability in both expression and splicing. (Subset 2) Genes with relatively high variability in gene expression, but low variability in splicing.
