Diagrams of DNA methylation patterns associated with maize B centromere. Methylation is only associated with the ZmB repeats, not with the Cent-CRM sequences in the normal B centromere. Methylation change was detected in a small region flanking the first ZmB array when the B chromosome is transferred to the genetic background of oats. In contrast, methylation was detected in the entire inactivated B centromere.
