Assessing the link between alteration in gene neighborhood and gene expression divergence. Distributions of the expression divergence value for genes with conserved (red) and altered (blue) neighborhood are compared using the Mann-Whitney test for five tissue types: brain, heart, kidney, liver, and testis. For visual clarity, median expression and sample size (i.e., number of genes) for genes with conserved and altered neighborhood categories are shown for each tissue. Y-axis is in log-scale. Maximal expression divergence values for a gene across all five tissues versus maximal expression divergence values for these two categories are compared using the Mann-Whitney test and the result is shown in the bottom panel.
