Cover The WFDC locus in the primate genome has an unusual density of rapidly evolving genes. Comparative sequencing of this genomic region in a series of primate species has allowed the evolutionary fate of each gene in the locus to be traced along the primate phylogenetic tree. Background images are primate lithographs extracted from General and Particular Descriptions of the Vertebrated Animals, Arranged Conformably to the Modern Discoveries and Improvements in Zoology, Order Quadrumana, by Edward Griffith (London, 1821), and Die Vollstandigste Naturgeschichte der Affen by H.G. Ludwig Reichenbach (Dresden, 1862). (Cover illustration by Belen Hurle and Darryl Leja. Images courtesy of Stephen Nash. [For details, see Hurle et al., pp. 276-286.])
