Exceptions to genome-wide patterns of bias. (A) There is little evidence of UBCS on either human or chimp sex chromosomes. There is also poor agreement between the human and chimp smoothed UBCS curves (ρ = 0.25 on chrX). The pseudo-autosomal regions (PAR) are shown in green. (B) Human chromosome 2 shows an atypical central peak, which is likely due to the fusion of two ancestral chromosomes (red, human chr2; blue, chimp chr2a and chr2b). The two smoothed curves are in remarkable agreement (ρ = 0.84). The UBCS signal for hypothetical telomeres (if no fusion had occurred) was predicted (green) by using 16 Mb of distal sequence (yellow).
