Schematic illustration for the evolution of alternative splicing after gene duplication. The ancestral gene has two alternative splice forms, L (long) and S (short). In the early stage after gene duplication, the L and S forms may become dominantly expressed in one of the duplicate copies A and B, respectively. In the late stage, some novel alternative splice forms may be generated.
