Cover From image to function: High-content imaging meets the human genome. The illustration depicts the mathematical transformation of an imaged field of cells (captured by a fluorescent microscope) into individual cellular objects and numerical descriptions of relevant cellular characteristics. In conjunction with a high-throughput functional genomics platform, this process has been used to scan approximately one-third of the genome to identify genes that mediated cellular proliferation and death. (For details, see Harada et al., pp. 1136–1144.)
