Phylogenetic history of Mus musculus variants. The figure shows a simplified phylogenetic tree of the Mus lineage (Guenet and Bohomme 2003). Insertion/deletion and substitution variants were assigned to one of three different branches of the tree (see Methods). Variants were further classified as transitions, transversions, and insertions/deletions. The χ-2 value was calculated on the basis of a test for independence between the origin of the variant and the type of substitution.
