The bias was measured by averaging χ2 values (standardized by gene size) across fourfold and threefold (Ile) degenerated boxes. For Buchnera, χ2 values were calculated separately for leading (•) and lagging strands (○), the reference being a set of 35 genes with the lowest CAI in E. coli for each orientation. For E. coli, the reference was the codon usage in the group of lowest CAI (<0.30) genes.
