ISH data for SMC marker-related genes. Expression was prominent in muscle cells but was also seen in a range of ectopic sites. 1, Intestinal SMC; 2, vascular SMC; 3, cardiac muscle; 4, diaphragm (skeletal muscle); 5, liver parenchyma; 6, CNS; 7, submandibular gland; 8, hair follicle (general mesenchymal expression seen); 9, lung parenchyma; 10, pancreas; 11, liver; 12, airway; 13, brown adipose tissue; 14, urinary bladder. Intestinal lumen artefact staining is due to endogenous alkaline phosphatase activity (asterisk).
