Disruptions to the coiled-coil arms display notable sequence conservation amid poorly conserved flanking coiled-coil regions. An alignment of the first coiled-coil arms of the human (top) and fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe; bottom) SMC3 orthologs. The disruptions (SMC3 loop I and SMC3 loop II) to the predicted coiled-coil domain are boxed. These disruptions are present within regions of high local homology relative to the remainder of the sequence.
