Illustration of the approach used to assign Gene Ontology (GO) functions to domains. Gene products (proteins) are assigned a molecular function by members of the Gene Ontology Consortium (hand associations). BLAST similarities are used to associate the GO-assigned proteins to domains. A heuristic algorithm is then used to assign GO functions to domains (learned associations).
