Estimates were based on official estimates (in 1893, 1900, and 1905; Wynter-Blyth 1956; Buxton et al. 1992), unofficial informal estimates (in 1880, 1905, 1913, and 1920; Wynter-Blyth 1956; Buxton et al. 1992), pug marks (in 1936–1963; Wynter-Blyth 1956; Chellam and Johnsing 1983; Buxton et al. 1992), and official counts at bait points (Chellam and Johnsing 1983).
