High-throughput imaging of brain gene expression. The cover depicts the second prinicpal component resulting from singular value decomposition of 2,000 gene expression patterns obtained from human brain hemisections. The data were obtained using a new method called voxelation, and the principal component represents an orthogonal gene vector that may be particularly important in specification of the cerebral cortex. The principal component was smoothed over voxels and the resulting image reflected about the midline to give bilateral symmetry. (For details, see Brown et al., pp. 244–254.)
