Pathways of OP detoxication. For the insecticides, a bioactivation reaction carried out by cytochrome P-450 (mixed function oxidases) is required to generate the very toxic oxon forms that inactivate the cholinesterases (Murphy 1980). The nerve agents do not require bioactivation for cholinesterase inhibition.
